Whether you’re considering cosmetic surgery, weight loss surgery, or any surgical procedure — one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing your surgeon.
With social media full of ‘before and afters’ and endless options both in the UK and abroad, it’s easy to be drawn in by deals, fast timelines, or influencer promotions. But behind every safe, successful surgery is something far less glamorous — a highly qualified surgeon, and proper regulation.
1. Check the GMC Specialist Register
In the UK, every doctor must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) to practise. But not every doctor is a specialist in the type of surgery you’re considering.
Before you commit, look up your surgeon on the GMC Specialist Register to make sure they are:
- Listed as a Consultant Specialist in their field (e.g. Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Urology)
- Fully licensed to practise in the UK
- In good standing with no restrictions or warnings
Top tip: If the procedure is surgical — your surgeon should be on the GMC Specialist Register, not just any medical register.
2. Don’t Be Fooled by Titles Alone
Terms like “Cosmetic Surgeon”, “Aesthetic Doctor”, or even “Harley Street Specialist” aren’t protected titles in the UK — which means any doctor can use them, even without formal surgical training.
Instead, look for clear evidence of:
- Surgical qualifications (FRCS or equivalent)
- GMC Specialist Registration
- Years of surgical experience in a hospital or consultant role
- Membership of recognised professional bodies (e.g. BAAPS, BAPRAS)
3. Ask the Right Questions
At your consultation, you have every right to ask:
- What’s your GMC registration number?
- Are you listed as a specialist in this type of surgery?
- How many times have you performed this procedure?
- What happens if something goes wrong?
- Who will be doing my follow-up care?
A good surgeon will welcome these questions. If you feel rushed, dismissed, or unclear — trust your instincts and keep looking.
3. Choose a Safe Setting
Equally important to your surgeon’s credentials is where your surgery takes place. Look for:
- A hospital or surgical facility that’s regulated by HIS (in Scotland) or CQC (in England)
- Full resuscitation and emergency care available on site
- Proper infection control, anaesthetic safety, and recovery protocols
- A clear plan for aftercare and follow-up
At Cosmedicare, all procedures take place in purpose-built, fully accredited hospitals, with care led by GMC-registered specialist surgeons — because your safety is never optional.
Choosing a surgeon is more than picking the cheapest price or the most glamorous Instagram page. It’s about trust, transparency, and training. Take your time and do your research by always asking the right questions.
You deserve care that’s safe, specialist, and truly centred around you.
